Just To Be For Sure, For Sure

In my excitement to share good music with friends and customers, at times I give a favorite CD or LP as a gift, just to find out they are out of print and impossible to get back in my collection. It has happened once too often.

A few months ago when I gave a copy of Kazue Sawai CD to a customer who had come to audition Musical Affairs speakers. The sound is so real. You hear Ms. Sawai play in your music room. You hear everything. So beautiful. I am willing to cough up a couple of hundred dollars to get back that CD.

Another CD I really like is by Tamia and Pierre Favre, called “de la nuit… le jour” on ECM New Series. Hard to find. I have seen their new CDs on Amazon go anywhere from thirty some dollars to around $130. Lucky me. Just found a good source for them and ordered 12 copies of them! Received today from Germany.

Holderlin was a great German poet. I have read a little of his works. Not much. I was introduced to his work through a Wim Wenders’ movie called Wings of Desire. In it, Bruno Ganz recites some Holderlin poem. Beautiful even to the ears of someone like me who does not speak German. Found out there is actually a recording of Holderlin poetry recited by Bruno Ganz. Lucky me. Took a few months until I could locate one. And a while longer to find the LP version. Now, a couple of more copies, just in case.

Arvo Part is a very good composer. His Miserere and Tabula Rasa are still two of my favorite works. Both out of print now. I got 12 copies of Miserere on LP and have a couple of copies on CD. I figure every now and then I can take them to friends as a gift instead of a bottle of wine. Well, a good bottle of wine while listening to great music is rather fun anyways. You can find a good interview with Arvo Part on YouTube, by none other Bjork.

Please help me find my Kazue Sawai CD.

What title are you searching from Kazue Sawai?

  2. mehran says:

Hi Peter, I do not have the title. But I think John Zorn was on that CD as well. Thanks to you I just checked both Amazon and Ebay. Neither has the CD. But I found a CD of Ms. Sawai playing with Joelle Leandre and ordered that one. I have a few other CDs of Ms. Sawai. All good. But the way that particular CD touched me was something else. Thanks Peter.
P.S. I learned a lot about music and Jazz while living in Amsterdam, going as often as I could to the Bimhuis.

Thanks Peter. I sincerely appreciate it that you take the time to read my blog and write at times. I love my new Grand Crescendos. They sound great with my DaVinci equipment and 47 lab products. I was lucky enough to live on Keizerstraat and Utrechtsestraat, in the Rembrandtplein area of Amsterdam, not so far from the Bimhuis. I saw lots of great Dutch musicians there like Hans Bennink, the great drummer. He once massaged my shoulders less than one minute. Amazing hands. Saw a very good Jazz musician there (name withheld) that fell flat on the floor drunk, and asleep. Saw Misha Mengelberg a few times. So good. I saw Peter Brotzman perform there, and within a few weeks saw him again in Tokyo. Met Marilyn Crispell there, with whom I have been in touch lately. Saw some great people perform with the Peking Opera. Wow!
You will absolutely love the sound of Kazue Sawai playing Koto on your Musical Affairs Grand Crescendos. Also, try some Iva Bittova. We stay in touch my friend. Thanks again.

  6. Peter Dekker says:

Peter, you are the best. Many thanks.
I wrote to the company and asked them if they can sell me 5 copies. One will be yours as a gift. I keep you posted.
I also asked my wife to talk to a friend of hers who had studied Koto with Ms. Sawai to see if Ms. Sawai has any copies left. I had met her in San Francisco once. Aside from being highly talented, she seems like a very nice and humble person.
    Thanks again my friend.

  11. Peter Dekker says:

Nice good morning Mehran ,so you see, some searching for your cd and in a few days we will play Nami and Sawai on our Grand Crescendo`s..
Tomorrow Hans will come to my house, to listen and to change the unit`s ( at this moment i play with Hans own unit`s which he knows very well) !
I burned them the last 100 hours in for Hans, so he will be very happy…
Hans plays a way to soft to burn in the units…

You`re welcome when you are in the Netherlands.
And have a nice trip to Munchen next week
